Can Pets Spread Bed Bugs?

While fleas commonly find their way onto house pets, bed bugs have little interest in living on animals or pets. Despite bed bugs leaving pets alone for feeding, they have been known to infest pet beds. With this in mind, pets do not spread bed bugs like they do with fleas. What about bed bugs biting your cat or dog?

  • Bed bugs have a preference for humans, but will also bite cats, dogs, rodents, and birds.
  • Bed bugs do not live in or on an animal’s fur.
  • Should a pet be bitten by a bed bug, bites will usually be in areas with less hair, such as their limbs or belly. They will appear like small red bumps.
  • If you see that your pet is showing unusual signs of discomfort, including itching and biting, you should inspect your pet for signs of bed bugs.

Will Bed Bugs Hurt Your Pet?

Since bed bugs rarely go for house pets, it is unlikely that bed bugs will hurt your pet. There are rare cases in which pets show signs of bites from bed bugs, but this should largely be taken as an indicator for further inspection of your animal and of the problem as a whole. Some ways you can follow up include looking for shed bed bug exoskeletons around or in their bedding. Living signs of bed bugs can also be noted, such as bed bugs on tags, or around the seams. Any evidence of bed bugs warrants a call to an exterminator as quickly as possible!

Can Dogs Get Bed Bugs Outside?

Since bed bugs need a blood host for survival, they rarely live or survive outside. Even if your neighbor’s home has bed bugs, it’s not a concern that your pet would somehow pick them up outside. Bed bugs depend on the indoor habitat for survival, so it is unlikely that there should be a transfer of bed bugs from outdoors into your home.
